Great Pyrenees dogs are an ancient breed, dating back over 1200 B.C. Docile by nature but will fight to the death to protect master or flock. Developed by sheep herders in the Pyrenees Mountains of France.
There was a time when most of my chickens and ducks would get killed every year by fox and raccoon. Finally after a couple of goat kills by neighborhood dogs I knew I had to think of something. Back then there was hardly anyone to talk to about goats much less guard animals. It wasn’t till several years later we were visiting my wife’s relatives and they had this BIG white dog living in a large chicken yard. I was hooked. We were to get a pup from the cousins but this dragged on forever until I started looking. I found a 10 month old female G.P. in the classified adds. Off we went on a 100 mile trip to buy a dog. The rest is history. My farm birds population is large now and I am able to sell many each year. No more goats killed either. The neighborhood dogs won’t walk the street in front of our place. They cross over to the other side. The coyotes to our back never come in. These stories could go on, but my point is now I could never imagine not having my dogs as guardians and also family friends. They have earned there feed many times over.
Great Pyrenees also make great and loving pets. They will display the same protective nature toward you and your family as the do with the livestock. It’s a matter of how they are bonded as a puppy.
Our dogs have also had a good joint history.

Guard Donkeys: We have guard donkey at some pastures because some places it is not practical to have guard dogs there due to feeding of a dog means daily visits to that field. The donkey can graze and live on the same food source as the goats and sheep. We sell colts that have already had exposure to goats, sheep or cattle. Be careful not to let some trader sell you some old jack who can do you much more harm than good.
Donkeys are territorial by nature and have an instinctive hate for canines intruding their space. We do however have G.P. dogs working together with donkeys but they were introduced gradually.
